“From July to September, 15% of the companies interviewed plan to hire more employees, while 7% expect to reduce their payrolls. Another 73% expect to maintain their current staff levels and 5% are not certain of their hiring plans. This yields a Net Employment Outlook* of 8%,” said Manpower spokesperson Mary Ann Lasky.
For the coming quarter, job prospects appear best in Construction, Durable and Nondurable Goods Manufacturing, Wholesale & Retail Trade, Information, Financial Activities, Professional & Business Services, Education & Health Services, Leisure & Hospitality and Other Services. Employers in Transportation & Utilities and Government plan to reduce staffing levels.
Manpower Employment Outlook Survey Results for the United States
Of the 18,000 U.S. employers surveyed, 18% expect to increase their staff levels during the third quarter, while 8% expect to reduce their payrolls, resulting in a Net Employment Outlook of 10%. When seasonally adjusted, the Net Employment Outlook becomes +6%. Seventy percent expect no change in hiring, and 4% are undecided about their Quarter 3 2010 hiring plans.
The next Manpower Employment Outlook Survey will be released on September 7, 2010 to report hiring expectations for Quarter 4 2010.
The Net Employment Outlook is derived by taking the percentage of employers anticipating an increase in hiring activity and subtracting from this the percentage of employers expecting a decrease in hiring activity.
Note to Editors
Effective with the Quarter 3 2010 results, adjustments have been made to the methodology of the 47-year-old Manpower Employment Outlook Survey. These adjustments include the addition of state-level reporting as well as the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico. Given that this is the first quarter that state-level data is offered, no historical data is available for individual states, the District of Columbia or Puerto Rico. Reports are also available for the top 100 Metropolitan Statistical Areas as determined by number of business establishments. All reports are available at http://press.manpower.com.
